The vehicle, wrapped in eye-catching brand vinyl, was fitted with a state-of-the-art Forge Intercooler, promising to bring out the best in the already impressive Golf R.

Why Upgrade Your Intercooler?

The MK8 Golf R is a powerhouse, but like any performance car, it struggles with heat soak under heavy load. This can throttle back performance just when you need that extra punch. Our goal was to enhance the car’s cooling efficiency, ensuring it performs optimally across all RPM ranges.

The Upgrade Process

We started by replacing the stock intercooler with Forge Motorsport’s high-performance intercooler Forge Motorsport Intercooler. Known for its superior cooling capabilities, this intercooler is designed specifically for the VW Golf MK8, Audi S3, Cupra Formentor, and Leon, making it a perfect fit for the Pipercross MK8 Golf R.

Data Logging and Results

To quantify the improvement, we conducted thorough data logging before and after the intercooler upgrade. Here’s what we found:

    • At 1700 RPM, the air intake temperature was recorded at 29°C.

    • At 4000 RPM, it dropped slightly to 24°C.

    • However, at 5000 RPM, the temperature spiked to 33°C.

These figures highlighted the stock system’s struggle to maintain consistent cooling under varied engine loads.

  • Performance with Forge Intercooler:

    • After the upgrade, we pushed the engine to 6500 RPM and recorded an impressive air intake temperature of just 22°C.

This stark contrast in performance clearly illustrates the efficiency of the Forge Intercooler. At higher RPMs, where performance vehicles are most vulnerable to heat soak, the Forge unit maintained a significantly lower temperature, enhancing overall engine performance and reliability.
