Wagner Tuning Side Mounted Radiator – Mercedes A45, CLA45 & GLA45 AMG

The Mercedes A45, CLA45, and GLA45 AMG all share Mercedes’ 2.0-litre M133 turbocharged engine, which uses an indirect charge air cooling system. Instead of cooling the intake charge directly with outside air (as a traditional intercooler does), this system uses a dedicated water circuit to cool the air before it enters the engine. Keeping that water circuit cool is essential, especially under hard driving or when the engine has been tuned for more power.

This Wagner Tuning upgraded side-mounted radiator replaces the original side cooler with a significantly larger, higher-capacity unit. It is designed to keep coolant temperatures lower for longer, supporting both performance and reliability when the engine is working hard.

Why Upgrade the Side Radiator?

The factory side cooler is adequate under standard conditions, but it can quickly become a limiting factor when the engine is pushed harder, whether through spirited road driving, track use, or a remap. As coolant temperatures climb, the charge air cooling becomes less effective, leading to a drop in power and, over time, increased thermal stress on the engine.

The Wagner Tuning replacement unit increases cooler volume by 77% over the standard part, allowing the system to absorb and dissipate considerably more heat. The result is more consistent cooling performance, helping to maintain power output and protect the engine during demanding use.

Competition Racing Mesh Core

The extra capacity comes from Wagner’s purpose-developed competition racing mesh core design. This construction balances the ratio between internal and external cooling surfaces to maximise heat transfer, while still allowing enough airflow to pass through to the main engine water radiator sitting behind it. In short, it does more cooling without starving neighbouring components of the airflow they need.
