Wagner Tuning BMW F-Series B48 B58 Chargecooler Radiator Kit
BMW’s B48 and B58 turbocharged engines use an indirect charge air cooling system. Rather than cooling the intake air directly with outside air (as a traditional front-mount intercooler would), the system circulates coolant through a water-to-air intercooler to pull heat out of the charged air before it enters the engine. This water then passes through a dedicated chargecooler radiator at the front of the car to shed that heat. It is an effective setup from the factory, but under sustained hard driving, hot weather, or tuned conditions, the standard chargecooler radiator can struggle to keep up – leading to rising intake temperatures and reduced performance.
This Wagner Tuning Competition Chargecooler Radiator Kit replaces the original water cooler in that circuit with a significantly larger and more capable unit, helping keep intake air temperatures lower and more consistent. It is particularly worthwhile if your engine has been remapped, runs higher boost, or sees regular track use.
Why Upgrade?
The standard chargecooler radiator does a reasonable job in everyday driving, but its capacity is limited. Wagner Tuning’s replacement increases the internal volume of the cooler by 117% compared to the original – from 7.70 litres to 16.70 litres. The larger water volume gives the cooling circuit far more thermal capacity, meaning it can absorb and dissipate heat over a longer period before temperatures begin to climb. In practice, this translates to more stable intake temperatures during repeated hard acceleration, longer pulls, or sustained track laps.
The radiator uses a competition-style racing mesh core, which maximises heat transfer while still allowing enough airflow through to reach the engine’s main coolant radiator behind it. It also features a thermally conductive anti-corrosion coating, helping to protect the unit and maintain cooling efficiency over the long term.
Key Benefits
- 117% larger coolant volume (7.70 to 16.70 litres) for improved heat capacity
- Lower and more consistent intake air temperatures under load
- Competition racing mesh core for efficient heat transfer
- Anti-corrosion coating for long-term durability
- Fits within the original space in the front-end assembly
Dimensions Compared
| Specification | OEM Radiator | Wagner Tuning Radiator |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions (mm) | 576 x 495 x 27 | 524 x 468 x 68 |
| Volume | 7.70 litres | 16.70 litres |
| Core Area | 2851 cm² | 2454 cm² |
The Wagner unit is notably thicker than the original (68mm versus 27mm), which is how it achieves the much larger internal volume without needing to be wider or taller. This allows it to fit within the existing space in the front-end assembly.
Installation
This kit is designed to be as straightforward to fit as possible. Wagner Tuning describe the installation as near plug-and-play, and the kit includes fitting instructions to guide you through the process. No major modifications to the vehicle should be required, though as with any cooling system work, care should be taken when draining and refilling the chargecooler circuit to ensure it is properly bled of air. Always follow the supplied instructions and use the correct coolant specification when refilling the system.
Fitment
This kit is developed for BMW F-Series models running the B48 (2.0 turbo) and B58 (3.0 turbo) engines, including popular applications such as the M140i, M240i, 340i, 440i, and equivalent X-series and Z4 variants. To confirm fitment for your specific vehicle, please use the vehicle lookup tool on the site or check the Vehicle Fitment tab for the full applications list.
