The Wagner Tuning Competition Intercooler Kit is a direct upgrade for the Audi SQ5 FY 3.0 TFSI, designed to keep intake temperatures in check when the engine is working hard. By replacing the restrictive stock unit with a much larger, more efficient core, this kit helps your SQ5 deliver more consistent power, particularly during spirited driving, track use, or in warmer conditions where the original intercooler tends to heat-soak.

Why upgrade the intercooler?

An intercooler cools the compressed air from the turbocharger before it enters the engine. Cooler air is denser, which means more oxygen, better combustion, and more reliable power. The factory intercooler on the SQ5 is adequate for standard use, but it can struggle to maintain steady intake temperatures under sustained load. Once temperatures climb, the ECU pulls timing and reduces boost to protect the engine, which leads to noticeable power loss.

Wagner Tuning’s Competition core addresses this with significantly more cooling capacity, helping the engine maintain consistent performance lap after lap, or pull after pull.

Performance and design

The Competition core measures 550 mm x 445 mm x 70 mm, offering a 134% larger flow area and 105% greater charge air volume than the original. Despite the increase in size, the unit weighs just 9.5 kg, helping to keep added mass to a minimum.

The core uses tube fin construction with internal turbulators – small features inside the tubes that disrupt airflow to improve heat transfer from the charge air to the cooler walls. The cast aluminium end tanks were CAD-designed and CFD-optimised to promote even airflow distribution and minimise pressure drop, so the upgrade improves cooling without choking the intake.

An anti-corrosion coating with good thermal conductivity is applied to protect the core while maintaining cooling efficiency. Each unit is pressure tested up to 6 bar, making it suitable for tuned and race applications.
