The MST Performance induction kit is a straightforward and effective upgrade for the 2021+ BMW M3 and M4 Competition models fitted with the S58 engine. By replacing the standard airbox with a more free-flowing intake setup, this kit allows the engine to breathe more easily – which can translate to improved throttle response, a more rewarding induction sound, and a genuine increase in power.

MST Performance quote dyno-tested gains of up to 12-14bhp on the S58 engine. Results will vary depending on the individual vehicle and its current state of tune, but the kit is designed to deliver noticeable improvements whether the car is standard or already running an ECU remap (the engine’s electronic control unit, which manages fuelling and ignition). In either case, the freer airflow gives the engine more to work with.

Why It Works

The factory airbox on the S58 is designed with noise reduction and emissions compliance in mind, which means airflow is somewhat restricted by default. This MST kit replaces that setup with a larger 4-inch inlet pipe and a free-flowing dry pleated filter, feeding cooler, denser air more directly to the turbocharger. Denser air means better combustion, which is where the power and throttle response gains come from.

The powder-coated heat shield is an important part of the kit – it helps separate the filter from underbonnet heat, keeping the incoming air as cool as possible. Cooler air is denser, and denser air produces more power. Without it, the benefits of the larger filter can be partially offset by heat soak from the engine bay.

The dry pleated filter design is worth noting too. Unlike oiled filters, it requires no re-oiling during servicing and is simple to clean and reuse – making long-term maintenance straightforward.

The kit is built to fit neatly into the engine bay with minimal modification, and the included instructions make installation manageable for most home mechanics with basic tools.
