Regardless of how cautious you are when removing or installing the OE stud, the factory cam cover is made of soft aluminium and the thread is prone to failing. This bolt is used by your ignition coil to ground the coil circuit, and even with only little thread damage, it is possible for a weak ground to form, causing running issues including misfires and timing retardation, caused by reduced spark energy. When doing engine testing or ignition system maintenance, the bolt is frequently taken out and put back in, causing the issue overtime.
The VAG group uses an oval bolt to hold down the coil pack which makes the issue worse every time the bolt is removed and installed.
Which kit do I need?
EA888 Gen.3 vehicles came with one of the plugs listed below (8K0971994 or 4D0971994), each featuring a slightly different connector plug, it’s important you identify which is present on your vehicles before ordering.
The Solution
By running a permanent earth to the stud behind the battery, the need to remove the top 10mm nut holding the OE coil earth wire down is no longer necessary, and the possibility of having a weak, loose, or damaged ground is eliminated. The new round threaded bolts provided in the kit must still be removed in order to remove the ignition coils, but you no longer need to “double nut” it to ground the circuit, reducing the likelihood of a weak circuit. Round threaded bolts are also much better for the longevity of the thread in the cam cover. The Earth wire is made to a motorsport standard using the best products including new genuine pins and seals, Raychem SCL and Raychem DR25.
