“I want to buy a tuning box instead of a full flash remap, what are my options and which is best?”
As a parts supplier & tuner we get asked this question A LOT! So we decided that we needed to write a quick blog showing the facts of both systems. Progressive Parts supply the JB1, JB4 and DTUK tuning boxes & throttle response kits so the choice really is up to you and what system suits your needs best.
Burger Motorsports JB1 & JB4
The JB1 has been around for a few years now and just recently Burger Motorsport have released their latest upgrade the JB4. There are little doubts that these systems see the best gains in power and torque and this is largely due to the fact that you can adjust some of the settings yourself to optimise the system for your car and any additional hardware modifications. This is truly great and ground breaking in the world of tuning boxes. As kits go you can’t really fault it’s ability and design. However the JB’s greatest asset to us is also it’s potential weakness and here is why;
Tuners (not including overnight mobile mapping services) spend years learning how to tune a car correctly. The car is run on a road, test track and dyno monitoring key aspects of the engine such as fuel pressure, timing, boost levels and even down to temperatures and cylinder timing retardation. Without monitoring, making tweaks and adjusting the calibration to meet the cars current setup, condition and future use (such as fuel quality and ambient operating temps, i.e. hot countries etc) you immediately run the risk of standard map settings not being suitable and thus not performing well, or worse, being unreliable.
Be wary of simply copying JB1/JB4 custom map settings off a forum/message board. Other users could have posted them for “bragging rights” or created an unsustainable map for the vehicle. DTUK
The DTUK system is one we have had on the shelves for a while. Having looked at many systems over the years we found it difficult to find kit that used decent OE connectors and wiring looms, most that we looked at were cheap Chinese units that I wouldn’t be happy with controlling my own car. This is where DTUK shine through;
Not only have they provided a reliable set of map settings for each vehicle, but everything includes a comprehensive set of instructions in every box so you can fit the kit yourself with just a little mechanical experience. Not quite as complex as the Burger Motorsports JB* range which require more interaction with boost sensors and wiring. The box comes with pre-set maps which you can shift between to find the one that suits your driving style. Some are set for low down torque others are for peak power but crucially all the settings are tried and tested and are safe for you to play around with and adjust yourself. Which means you can play around without worrying about any adverse consequences. A great option for starting out or not looking to push the vehicle farthest for performance…

Our general advice is this:
- If you are a tuner or you want to get the car setup by a professional tuner to optimise it for your mods you have then the JB range is for you.
- If you are not planning on making any other changes or If you want a safe option that you can play with without causing potential damage then go for the DTUK system.
